How Dementia Caregiver Support Groups Benefit Both the Caregiver and the Person with Dementia

January 13, 2026

Caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is a journey filled with love, change, and—often—overwhelm. While much attention is rightly given to the needs of the person with dementia, caregivers frequently put their own well-being last. One powerful resource that supports both is a dementia caregiver support group.

At Kansas Christian Home (KCH), we host a monthly Dementia Caregiver Support Group, but just as importantly, we encourage caregivers to find the group that feels like the best fit for them. Support looks different for everyone, and the right environment can make a meaningful difference.

Follow KCH’s Dementia Caregiver Support Group

Why Support Groups Matter for Caregivers

Caregivers often carry emotional, physical, and mental stress that can quietly build over time. Dementia caregiver support groups offer a space where caregivers can:

  • Share experiences without judgment from others who truly understand
  • Learn practical strategies for communication, behavior changes, and daily care
  • Reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and burnout
  • Gain confidence in their caregiving role
  • Access education and local resources related to dementia care

When caregivers feel supported, informed, and emotionally grounded, they are better equipped to provide calm, compassionate care at home.

How Support Groups Benefit the Person with Dementia

While the person with dementia may not attend the support group themselves, the benefits often extend directly to them.

Caregivers who participate in support groups often report:

  • Improved communication with their loved one
  • More patience and understanding during difficult moments
  • Reduced stress in the home environment, which can help ease agitation or confusion
  • Better consistency in routines, which is especially important for individuals with dementia

Simply put, when caregivers feel supported, the person with dementia often experiences greater emotional safety and quality of life.

Finding the Right Dementia Caregiver Support Group

Not every support group will feel like the right match—and that’s okay. Finding the best fit may take time, and caregivers should feel empowered to explore their options.

When choosing a dementia caregiver support group, consider:

  • Group size: Some prefer small, intimate conversations; others enjoy larger group discussions
  • Facilitation style: Groups may be led by healthcare professionals, social workers, or peer facilitators
  • Meeting format: In-person, virtual, or hybrid options
  • Focus: Educational, emotional support, faith-based, or a blend of approaches
  • Schedule and location: Consistency and convenience matter

The “right” group is one where you feel heard, respected, and supported.

A Local Resource: KCH’s Monthly Dementia Caregiver Support Group

Kansas Christian Home is proud to offer a monthly Dementia Caregiver Support Group open to caregivers in the Newton area. These gatherings provide education, encouragement, and connection in a welcoming environment.

Whether caregivers attend regularly or simply drop in when they need extra support, the group exists as a reminder that no one has to navigate dementia alone.

Even if KCH’s group isn’t the right fit, we believe deeply in the value of caregivers finding some form of community and support.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Dementia changes many things—but isolation doesn’t have to be one of them. Support groups help caregivers care better for themselves, which in turn helps them care better for the person they love.

If you are caring for someone living with dementia, consider exploring a caregiver support group near you. The right support can strengthen not just the caregiver—but the entire caregiving relationship.

At Kansas Christian Home, we believe caring for the caregiver is an essential part of caring for the whole person.
