Kansas Christian Home (KCH) recently welcomed community members, donors, and friends to its annual Legacy of John – Graceful Giving Day, a signature event that celebrates compassion, connection, and the mission that has guided KCH since 1962. The day offered attendees a meaningful look at what makes KCH a trusted senior living community for residents across Newton, Wichita, and the surrounding region.
A Touching Story That Set the Tone
The event began with a powerful true story—one that illustrated exactly what “Graceful Giving” means at KCH. Attendees listened as the team shared how an older adult, newly admitted and feeling hopeless and forgotten, was embraced by the entire KCH community.
From social services and housekeeping to dining, laundry, and nursing, every team member played a part in showing her that she mattered—that she was safe, valued, and cared for. It was a moving reminder of the legacy that inspires this event: love in action, dignity in every interaction, and service rooted in faith.
A Meal That Felt Like Home
Guests then enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the KCH Dining Team—a meal that accurately reflects what residents enjoy every day. As attendees gathered around the table, the food and fellowship offered a glimpse into the home-like atmosphere KCH strives to create on campus.
Touring the KCH Campus: A Behind-the-Scenes Experience
After lunch, attendees climbed aboard the KCH bus for a guided tour across campus. Sam Schaefer, Senior Living Counselor, shared stories and history about KCH’s independent living neighborhood, highlighting how residents are empowered to design, decorate, and personalize their homes. A beautifully curated home showcased just how warm and welcoming independent living can be.
The tour then moved into Tilsley Village, KCH’s innovative assisted living alternative. Kala Shaw, Director of Campus Life, welcomed attendees and shared her own 13-year journey at KCH, emphasizing the commitment her team brings to caring for residents each and every day.
Next, the group visited the Special Care Unit, guided by Tiffani Mead, Social Services Designee. Here, attendees saw firsthand how KCH team members support residents living with dementia—providing safety, comfort, and individualized attention.
Of course, no tour is complete without a stop to see Chief, the beloved KCH dog who greets visitors from the office of Karen Parker. His friendly presence brought smiles to everyone on the tour.
The journey concluded at the Garden Path Community Center, introduced by Jasmine Huerta, Wellness Coordinator. Opened earlier this spring, this beautiful new community space offers fresh opportunities for engagement, programming, wellness, and fellowship.
A Thoughtful Parting Gift
Before leaving, attendees received a goodie bag and a custom-label candle from the KCH swag store—a small token of appreciation for their time and for supporting the mission of Kansas Christian Home.
